100% Pure Camel Hair

Berkeley Ergonomics Camel Hair

Our camel hair is an exceptional filling, made from the pure undercoat of the Bactrian camel of the province Gobi Altai in Western Mongolia. Their fine hair with an average thickness of 18.5-19 mic is ideal for mattress and comforter fills and provides loft, resilience and outstanding temperature balance. (Click here to learn more about the importance of temperature balance for optimal sleep)

Compared to sheep wool, the hair is finer with an extraordinary ability to regulate moisture and temperature under all thermal conditions.

The domesticated two-humped Bactrian camel has served as a pack animal in inner Asia since ancient times. With its tolerance for cold, drought, and high altitudes, it enabled the travel of caravans on the Silk Road . The animals are well adapted to the extreme temperature variations in this environment where summer highs often top 100 ° F and winter months can see significant amounts of snow.

They have a fine undercoat and an outer coarse hair layer (guard hair) which work together to balance and protect them from extreme temperatures in their environment.  The camel's pure undercoat is very soft and frequently used for high-end coats.

The herdsmen are nomadic people who have lived in harmony with nature for centuries. Like they’ve done for generations, they harvest the camel hair through manually combing the strips of loose hair that the animal sheds in spring. Since the coarser hair is not desired for our purpose, the material goes through a mechanical separation process where centrifugal force is used to separate out the coarser, heavier hair, leaving only 25-35% of the harvest as soft, fine camel hair.

Before carding the fibers are scoured with an APEO free detergent. Carding is a mechanical process that disentangles, cleans and intermixes fibers to produce a continuous web for subsequent processing. The resulting card web is loosely needled to maintain the loft and cut to the required width and length, rolled up and packaged ready to be shipped to our factory in Southern California.

We use this exceptional material in some of our mattress models and camel fill comforters.
